The process of becoming a HLTA
spacer

Applications for the HLTA programme need to be made through your Local Authority or directly to ELC. You can find contact details for your Local Authority by entering the postcode of your school on the HLTA East homepage.

In July 2010 the TDA withdrew funding for HLTA preparation through tehe Local Authorities. There is still the opportunity to access some fudning for the assessment through Fast Track Preparation, The content of this is essentially the same as the previou preparation for assessment but is condensed into two longer days with candidates expected to spend the equivalent of a day during the course on individual study.

The HLTA assessment is made up of three main parts. Candidates must write four tasks about their day-to-day work in school and references the HLTA standards. They collect a portfolio of evidence that relates to their writing, and includes documents such as school policies, lesson plans etc. Finally there is a school visit by an assessor who has read the written tasks. During the visit the assessor looks at the portfolio and interviews witnesses who work closely with the candidate. Following this they make a recommendation and submit the paperwork to ELC where it is moderated. The TDA then informs the candidate of the outcome.

Appeal Process - Procedure
If, following the assessment, your outcome is 'Partial Re-assessment' or 'Not met', and you believe that this is because the correct procedure has not been followed, you have the right to appeal. Please click here for further information.
