In the workplace
The first step is to talk with your colleagues and TAs to identify those who would be interested.

As a guide you will then need to ensure that they have:

  • Experience of advancing learning with a whole class, without the teacher being present;
  • Experience of direct contact with parents or carers regarding a pupil's learning;
  • Opportunities to observe others and have feedback, in order to learn and improve your practice;

We recommend the appointment of a school based mentor to support candidates through the preparation and assessment process. Your Local Authority can provide them with training and information about this role.

Funding
Significant funding is available from all Local Authorities in the Eastern region. This funding is available for HLTAs in Local Authority maintained schools (which is the majority of schools) and will cover all training and assessment. It also includes cover for the candidate’s existing work as a TA whilst they are out from school. You can find contact details for your Local Authority by entering the postcode of your school on the HLTA East homepage.

Non-LA maintainted schools
If you work in a different type of school then here are starting points

  • For Academy and City Technology Colleges and non-maintained special schools, the TDA funds the assessment fee (£520) but the school or individual will need to fund any training. Contact the Eastern Leadership Centre for next steps.
  • For private schools, candidates should approach their headteachers then the Eastern Leadership Centre.
