Applications for the HLTA programme need to be made through your Local Authority. You can find contact details for your Local Authority by entering the postcode of your school on the HLTA East homepage.

Your Local Authority will help identify your training and preparation needs and recommend the appropriate route to HLTA status for you.

There are three routes available, the very longest taking about seventeen days spread over three terms to complete.

In discussion with your headteacher and Local Authority, decide from the following:

Route 1
Optional Units – there are ten of these, one day optional units to choose from.  They aim to help fill any gaps or areas of weakness in your knowledge and understanding of the standards required to achieve HLTA status. Topics include whole class teaching, ICT and assessment.

Route 2
Core Route – this involves seven days of face-to-face training, covering all the HLTA standards, drawing on your experience and helping you to reflect on your skills and role in school. This route helps to build your confidence and understanding of the HLTA standards. All candidates who complete the seven days will move to the three day Assessment Preparation Route.

Route 3
Assessment Preparation Route - this is the compulsory three day preparation for all candidates. It is suitable for those candidates who, following their ‘Needs Analysis’, are already working at a Higher Level. The three days ensure that you understand the standards and know how to complete the documentation ready for the assessor when he/she visits you in school. For those candidates who opt for the three day assessment preparation route only there is no training involved.  Candidates must already be meeting the HLTA standards.
