The HLTA programme is available to teaching assistants East. You’ll need the support of your headteacher to register for the programme. So far 1,500 TAs in the East have achieved the status and many are working in schools supporting teaching and learning.
There are currently 33 standards which TAs need to achieve before they can become an HLTA. These standards are explained on the TDA website.
Before making an application for HLTA status we recommend that you look at the standards and, in discussion with colleagues, decide how your current knowledge, understanding and experience match them. You will need to be honest in your self-assessment and that is why having the support of a ‘critical friend’ is helpful.
Making your application Once you have identified your areas of strength and those for further development, with the support of your headteacher, you will be able to apply for funding from your Local Authority.
Your Local Authority will ask you to complete a ‘Needs Analysis’ document and supply them with evidence of Achievement at Level 2 or GCSE in Numeracy and Literacy. If this is difficult support can be obtained from your local Learn Direct centre (0800 100 900). Do not be put off by this requirement as support is available; and many previous candidates who did not have a Level 2 qualification, have now achieved HLTA status.
Once your Local Authority approves your application and confirms your funding you will need to confirm the agreed training and/or assessment route. Following training and/or preparation for assessment you then need to complete the assessment tasks and submit your work to an assessor. Your school visit assessment is carried out in school at a mutually convenient time. Following the visit, your work and the assessors’ recommendations are submitted to a panel for moderation.
